American Style cutting from 6 to 4 issues/year

At the same time AAW going from 4 to 6 issues. Any comments?

  1. Not surprising American Style cutback considering print media throughout the world is in trouble. I would presume their projected ad revenue is down for 2010 considering what appears to be a bad year for galleries which are the publication's main advertisers. AAW apparently increasing the number of American Woodturner issues because the membership wanted it. The main costs for the AAW publication are mostly production driven — getting pages ready for printing, buying newsprint, a short press run. Almost all of the content (articles, photos) is provided by the membership, much of free. Ad staff is small because it is a niche publication with speciality advertisers going after a specific customers. So the AAW publication has few personnel expenses to speak of compared to slick magazine like American Style (salaries/benefits for writers/photographers/editors/marketing staff).
